The Story Behind 'Lovesick'

The Lyrics

Verse: Lovesick on the inside, I can't hide, The pain I feel I can't hide any longer, Once more I broke stride, I turned wide, Couldn't see the other side of the street, Suffocate, I won't accept my fate, cuz what kills me makes me stronger, Break me, take me, love me, Go ahead, stand me back up on my feet, Prechorus: Oh, I'm going under, Oh, I can hear the thunder, Chorus: You've got me Lovesick, I'm waiting for you, You've got me lovesick baby, You've got me lovesick, Darling it's true, You've got me lovesick, Take me home to where I belong, Verse 2: Lovesick but I don't mind, I've been blind, for so long, but when I'm with you I see, Hang on, hold tight, I won't lie, I can't guarantee that I can set us free, Separate the weak from the great, So you can see what's worth your time, Don't tell me that it's too late, Cuz I just might cut loose my mind, Bridge: You've got me lovesick, baby, what can I do? You've got me lovesick, baby, what's in it for you? You've got me, you've got me, you've got me lovesick, what can I do do do for youa? Verse 3: Lovesick on the inside, I can't hide, The pain I feel I can't hide any longer, Once more I broke stride, I turned wide, Couldn't see, the other side of the street, But if you give me one more chance I, I just might turn this around, I won't be another mistake, think it's time what's lost was found, Bridge 2: You've got me lovesick, baby, what can I do, You've got me lovesick, baby, what's in it for you? You've got me, You've got me, You've got me, love love sick sick yeah!

The Story

This song was written at a point in my life after I had several relationships that went south. I was really into all these people but felt like I wasn't in the right place to make anything happen. I have a tendency to think less about myself when around someone I really respect to the point that I am sometimes afraid of doing anything that might result in them thinking less of me, which translates poorly in my love life.

So I wrote this song about feeling like I can't get over these obstacles I seem to place for myself. The song could be interpreted as being sick of love, but in this case it's more being sick for love. I often times interpret it myself as being a song about being willing to do anything for someone who's terrible for you, but I think it's really about trying to get through your own psychological and emotional barriers to allow you to really go all-in on a relationship with someone you really feel something for. I hope that anybody out there who has any sort of self-deprecating views of themselves will relate to my struggles and be inspired to work on themselves and grow.

The Recording

This song was written right before I went in to record the songs that would become 'Lovesick' and 'Myeras.' I came in with just the lyrics and some chords I had worked on. There was a rough demo, I was originally going for a more Foo Fighters-esque rock banger. When Chris Dopkin (The Engineer and Producer on this project) and I first jammed on it that's what I thought we were going for. I left the song in Chris' hands to write some parts for it. When I came back the song was something I did not expect but that's what made me love it more.

As we got deeper into the production, a lot of really great musical elements were added, Chris wrote great guitar and bass parts and added layers of synth and percussion which really gave the song a unique sound. We were lucky enough to have Jimmy Herberson play drums on the track. By the end the song was one of the most unique songs on the album. I'm still not that sure what I could compare the song to in terms of style.
